Chapter Nineteen

After spritzing her face and dabbing off most of the makeup, Jesse ran a brush through her hair until it moved freely and the curls relaxed into waves. Then she slipped on an oversized white shirt and black leggings, added a comfy pair of canvas loafers, and headed for the hospital located a half-hour away in Culverton.

“How is she?” Jesse whispered as she entered the private room where Iva Jane had been moved after surgery.

Sophia put down the book she had been reading. “She was awake for a little while after she came out of recovery, but she’s sleeping again now.”

“How did it go?” Jesse asked as her mother rose to greet her.

Taking Jesse’s arm, Sophia led her out of the room and into the hall. “Iva will probably sleep for a while longer, and I could sure use a cup of coffee. How about you?”

“What you could probably use is a good night’s sleep,” Jesse insisted as they began to walk toward the elevator. “But, yeah, sure, if that’s what you want, coffee’s okay, too. Has Chrissy been here?”

“She stopped by, and Iva woke up for a few minutes. Chrissy said she’d come back up later and sit with Iva so I could go home for the night. Chrissy said she could use some quiet time to work on lyrics for a new song, and the hospital was as good a place as any.”

“Well, I know they’re supposed to be doing an album while she’s here, so I guess it’s good if that works for her. And the surgery,” Jesse asked again, “Do you know how that went?”

“The surgeon popped his head in and said he’d be back tomorrow when Iva Jane was alert.”

“Did it sound it good or bad?”

“He seemed serious,” Sophia said. “But then, he’s a surgeon, and they’re kind of that way. I don’t think we’re going to know much until tomorrow. How did the funeral go?”

“I don’t even know why we went. Chrissy sat in the back of the church, didn’t speak to anyone, and we left before it was even over.”

“Was she upset?”

“Overwhelmed, I think. I imagine the last funeral she went to would have been her father’s, so maybe this brought back memories. I don’t know. She wasn’t very talkative.”

“Nothing awkward happened?” Sophia asked as they entered the cafeteria and found the coffee.

“Well, I wouldn’t say that. Among other things, Chrissy’s grandparents didn’t seem very friendly.” Jesse frowned as she remembered the moment when Ethel Potter turned and stared at them. “It was all pretty strange, actually. I would guess there’s quite a story buried there.”

“Well, from what Iva Jane said yesterday, it sounds as if Chrissy’s grandparents blame her, in part at least, for what happened to her mother. Which is just silly.” Disapproval was obvious in Sophia’s voice. “Maybe there was more to the story. And maybe her mother was just defending herself. But Chrissy was only a child at the time, and I don’t know how anyone could blame her.
